Castro Marim golf course is located in the eastern Algarve area of Portugal just a stone’s throw from the Spanish border. The location is excellent and just down the road from Porto airport. I travelled with my wife and my parents and for us this was where we learnt to play golf. We had 4 days of intensive lessons in the heat. Well apart from the first morning when it was raining and Nigel the (English) professional at first refused to go out. I think he’d been in Portugal too long! However as we were used to the English weather we didn’t mind playing in the rain. We fairly easily convinced him to take us out and we went to the range, which was set amongst the woods.

The lessons were really good fun and we learnt so much. We used to have a 2 hour break for lunch and either ate at the golf course which was very good, or for some variation at a restaurant in the pretty little town of Altura. Our accommodation was actually just over the border in Ayamonte Spain. It was in a very respectable, if a little uninspiring, all-inclusive hotel the Riu Atlantico. The food and accommodation were fine, but as we were out playing golf most of the time I cannot vouch for any of the other facilities.

After our 4 ½ days of lessons we got to go the course and it was really good fun. We hit our balls in the water, lost them in the rough and generally got round with an unmentionable score. It was probably a good thing that they reserved the afternoon on that particular course for learners so we didn’t really hold anyone up. I would definitely recommend Portugal as a golf destination and it is an especially  good place to learn the sport.

At the weekend we decided to explore the rest of the Algarve. We headed off to Lagos for 2 nights where we stayed in the Tivoli Lagos hotel, which was quite a nice hotel. We enjoyed the Algarve and it was nice to visit some beaches and take a break from the golf. We went in November and the weather was really nice. After the week was over it was hard returning to England, to the cold and to work.

I would definitely recommend the Algarve for a golfing holiday and there are numerous courses to choose from.
