My wife wanted to arrange a camping weekend and suggested the Brecon Beacons. I was a bit sceptical at first as I thought the drive to the Brecon Beacons would be too long for just a short break.   However Brecon Beacons are surprisingly easy to reach from London. We did the drive in just over 3 hours.

We arrived at our campsite, just outside the town of Brecon and pitched our tent, before heading off to town to get some food from the local chippy. The next morning we explored the town of Brecon properly and had some breakfast in a cafe just outside the cathedral. The town itself is quite small and quaint. We also bought some food from the local supermarket for a picnic as we were planning on doing a long walk and would need refreshments. We then headed off to the Brecon Beacons National park visitor information.

When we got there we asked for some information and advice on walks and decided to go for a 10 mile walk up and down a mountain. It was a lot tougher than expected as we had to go up very steep fields and wade through some boggy ground. The weather also turned from being nice and sunny to showers and high wind. I was pretty cold when we were standing on top of the mountain with a big wind chill factor. Luckily we were well prepared and had lots of layers and raincoats with us.

My feet and legs were aching when we got back to the car and we just about had enough energy to go to the supermarket and get some food for a BBQ. We arrived back at the campsite and had a BBQ which tasted so nice after having done that walk. Later in the evening we had a campfire to keep us warm.

The next day we headed back towards London and in the morning we stopped off at Abergavenny to have a walk round. It seemed like a nice town, however it was raining so we couldn’t enjoy it as much as we liked. We decided to have Sunday lunch at a country pub and went to the Nantyffin Cider Mill in nearby Crickhowell. The food and ambience were very good. After lunch we hit the road again, after we crossed the Severn Bridge the weather seemed to clear so we decided to stop by the Wetlands trust in Slimbridge. This was only a small detour and it broke the journey up nicely. It was well worth doing especially as we are WWT members and entry was therefore free.

All in all I would say a short break to the Brecon Beacons is well worth doing. Even if you’re not into camping there seemed to be plenty of B & B’s and other accommodation in the area.
